Friday Seminars Address Topics for A Brave New Workplace

The Friday Seminars, to be held on April 5, 2019 at the 34th Annual SIOP Conference in Washington DC/National Harbor, apply I-O principles to workplace issues unique to life in the information age. These sessions offer CE credit and networking opportunities along with instruction in important skills and concepts for managing the modern workforce.

Topics range from high impact, high stress applications like cybersecurity incident response to investigation of more widespread issues of social media in the workplace. Other seminars with available seats address the use of NLP and text analytics in organizational research and the foundational skill of translating I-O research for practical use in organizations. SIOP’s Friday Seminars offer researchers and practitioners an opportunity to develop new skills, explore new topics, and keep up with cutting-edge advances in research and practice. The organizing committee, led this year by Meghan Thornton-Lugo, also includes Jeffrey Jolton, Eccho Yu, Ho Kwan Cheung, David Geller, and Michael Hoffman

Invited experts for the 3-hour Friday Seminars will lead attendees through thorough coverage of the topics in an interactive learning environment. Depending on the topic, each presentation may include break-out discussions, case studies, experiential exercises, and networking.

The cost for each Friday Seminar is $150.00.  Space is limited, and Friday Seminars do sell out. Register through the conference registration portal. Friday Seminar #1, “Fad to Fixture: Legality, Practicality, and Ethics of Workplace Social Media” is presented by Daly Vaughn, Shaker International and Richard N. Landers, University of Minnesota, a pair with deep and broad experience in this topic of widespread importance. They’ll cover how HR professionals and employees are currently using SM content in work contexts, and what risks and opportunities are associated with these applications; explain the working knowledge of existing policies and guidelines shaping employer usage; discuss and critique the latest research and legal cases on the topic; and the use of web scraping and AI approaches to finding value in social media data.

Ron Piccolo, University of Central Florida, presents Friday Seminar #2, “Translating Research for a Practitioner Audience.” The session will help I-O psychologists provide practical value and foster high quality decisions for organizations. Learning objectives include Identifying opportunities to conduct research in corporate settings; listing and comparing practitioner-oriented research interests; and explaining techniques to translate research findings for a practitioner audience.

Friday Seminar #5, “Error Message: I-O Tools Not Yet Applied to Improve Cybersecurity Incident Response!” features Daniel B. Shore, George Mason University, and Robert Kittinger, Sandia National Laboratories. The session will give attendees an opportunity to engage with various I-O-based tools that can be applied in the high stakes VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) cybersecurity incident response environment that requires individuals, teams, and multiteam systems to collaborate.  The presenters will offer protocols and processes related to decision making, collaborative problem solving, information sharing, transactive memory, and communication to help alleviate some of the challenges to collaboration.

James Meaden and Cory Kind, research scientists with SHL, team up to offer Friday Seminar #6, “Natural Language Processing and Text Analytics in Organization Research.” The seminar provides a detailed introduction to best practices in NLP and text analytics in organizational research, with an emphasis on application to common talent challenges. An interactive tutorial with a mini-study will create a practical framework that attendees can use to guide the planning and successful implementation of their text analytics projects.

The SIOP Friday Seminars offer authoritative information on important cutting-edge and foundational topics. Similar offerings cost two or three times as much to attend. SIOP is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to promoting the science, practice and teaching of I-O psychology, and the seminars, like the rest of the SIOP Annual Conference, are organized by volunteer members of the Society. As a result, the seminars can be offered at this very reasonable price, and you are assured that the topics and the presenters represent the best in the field, chosen by other experts.
