Scores of SIOP Conference Sessions on Top 10 Trends

I-O psychologists focus on some of the most important and complicated challenges businesses face, those concerning the workforce. Now, as people are trying to accommodate the accelerating pace of change in the early days of the information era, this work is more important than ever.

The 2019 SIOP Top 10 Workplace Trends captured the tenor of the times with its dual focus on concerns triggered by technology and some age-old issues receiving new attention thanks to evolving social norms.  The 34th Annual SIOP Conference, at the spacious Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor/Washington DC April 4-6, 2019, features scores of presentations on these topics.

The number one trend, according to surveys completed by nearly a thousand SIOP members in the fall of 2018, is Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In addition, Trends 3, 6, and 8 are directly related, addressing respectively Automation of Jobs and Tasks, Working With Big Data, and Data Visualization and Communication.

The number two workplace trend for 2019 is Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity.  It’s been appearing on Top 10 lists since 2015 and is joined on this year’s list by topic number 5, Sexual Harassment; #MeToo at Work.

Searching the online conference program for the Diversity/Inclusion topic area yields 111 presentations covering the spectrum of harassment, diversity and inclusion, and equity topics. Here are just a few samples of the variety of topics:

  • The Trump Effect: Has the Trump Presidency Influenced the Work of Diversity Scholars? - Panel Discussion, April 5 at 1 pm

The IGNITE session organized by the Visibility Committee, Positioning SIOP as the Premier and Trusted Authority: Leaders IGNITE the Top Ten Trends, on Saturday, April 6 at 10 am, offers a whirlwind overview of all the top trends, in an engaging format.
