Take a Deep Dive Into R

by SIOP Administrative Office

CARMA and SIOP Offer Short Courses on R, January 10-12

SIOP has teamed up with CARMA, the Consortium for the Advancement of Research Methods and Analysis, to bring members an exciting opportunity to deepen their knowledge of R.

The 3-day intensive courses, featuring presentations by several SIOP members, are offered at the University of South Carolina, January 10-12, 2019. Thanks to the ongoing collaboration between SIOP and CARMA, SIOP members and student members can attend at the deeply discounted CARMA member rates.

Registrants for the Short Courses on R may choose from the following:

  • Introduction to R, led by Dr. Scott Tonidandel, University of North Carolina Charlotte
  • Regression with R, led by Dr. Ron Landis, Illinois Institute of Technology
  • Introduction to Multilevel Analysis With R, led by Dr. Paul Bliese, University of South Carolina
  • Introduction to SEM With R and LAVAAN led by Dr. Robert Vandenberg, University of Georgia
  • Web Scraping: Data Collection and Analysis, led by Dr. Richard Landers, University of Minnesota
  • Introduction to Bayesian Analysis With R, led by Dr. Steve Culpepper, University of Illinois
  • Analysis of Big Data, led by Dr. Jeff Stanton, Syracuse University

The courses are taught concurrently. In addition, registration for the Short Course includes a four-hour workshop on the Basics of R, offered in-person on January 9 or online on demand.

R is s one of the most widely used statistical tools in the field, and the Research Methods Short Courses on R and its use in organizational research are a great opportunity to master a specific technique or application.

Short Course instructors are former editors and current editorial board members from leading organizational journals who are recognized experts on their topics and who understand how their methods are applied in organizational settings.

The courses include a mix of lecture and hands-on experiential activities, and participants will be able to socialize and network with the instructors and faculty/doctoral students from leading universities.

SIOP Past President Fred Oswald has been instrumental in developing the collaboration with CARMA and in advocating for this offering. "Learning R has become increasingly important for I-O psychologists, in both the research and practice arenas,” he said. “The CARMA short courses provide world-class content and instruction in R. They come very highly recommended."

This is the second collaboration between SIOP and CARMA. The two organizations offered free online training sessions this past August on how to review for scientific journals and conferences.

CARMA is an interdisciplinary consortium hosted by the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, devoted to helping faculty, graduate students, and professionals learn of current developments in statistics and research methods. The research focus is on topics relevant to management and organizational sciences.
