New White Paper Analyzes Performance Management Trends

by SIOP Administrative Office

Performance management is a hot topic in today’s workplace. Its main purpose is to align the behavior and development of employees with the strategic goals of the organization. However, a 2016 survey showed only 26% of employees thought employee management “reinforced desired cultural values and behaviors.” Another recent study found only 15% of executives felt their performance management systems were effective.

Nonetheless, considerable evidence exists that performance management, when done well, does benefit organizations and staff. A newly released paper by Deborah Ford and Steven T. Hunt cuts through the noise of conflicting opinions about the topic by “reviewing current trends and innovations in performance management with an emphasis on marrying academic research with practical business application.”

A Critical Evaluation of Performance Management Trends” is part of the SIOP Visiblity Committee’s Hot Topics White Paper Series. This brief, clearly written report includes summaries of research and trends and concludes with some simple guidelines to help managers create the right performance management systems for their own organizations.

SIOP White Papers are produced by three SIOP committees: International Affairs, Scientific Affairs, and Visibility. For more information about the SIOP white papers, read the "About the Authoring SIOP Committees" section at the bottom of the index page. All white papers listed are downloadable PDFs.
