SIOP Seeks Conference Reviewers

by Zack Horn, 2017 SIOP Program Chair

The SIOP 2017 Program Committee seeks SIOP members’ help as reviewers to ensure a top-notch program at next year’s conference.

Signing up is quicker and easier than ever – using the all-new system on siop.org, you can now select up to 10 reviewer content areas in less than a minute! Simply follow Steps 1, 2, and 3 on the reviewer signup page

The reviewer signup deadline is September 9, 2016 (5:00 PM US EDT).

This year, we have evolved the volunteer reviewer process to maximize efficiency and help you quickly provide constructive feedback to submitters. If you have volunteered to review in the past, thanks for your continued partnership. If you’re a first-time volunteer reviewer, we’re excited for your voice to be heard as we shape the quality of the 2017 SIOP Conference. Welcome aboard, and have fun!

Who is eligible to review?
All current SIOP Fellows, Members, Associates, International Affiliates, and retired members are eligible to serve as reviewers. If you are a Student Affiliate, you are also eligible if you have defended your dissertation proposal and have presented as a first author at a prior SIOP conference.

Reviewer Benefits:

  • Sincere gratitude from your fellow SIOP Members who work year round to plan the SIOP Conference
  • The intrinsic reward of serving your profession and helping to shape the 2017 SIOP Conference
  • Recognition in the printed conference program and on the conference website
  • A badge ribbon at the conference to signify your contribution as a reviewer
  • Following acceptance decisions, you’ll be able to see the acceptance status and all reviewer comments for each session you review (similar to journals)

Online reviewer registration process:
To volunteer by September 9, 2016, please go to the reviewer signup form on the SIOP website at http://my.siop.org/Meetings/Reviewer-Signup, or navigate to Meetings > Reviewer Signup from the SIOP.org homepage.

How does the review process work?
The conference submission and review process is conducted entirely online.

  1. Reviewers will receive papers to review in early October and will submit reviews about 3 weeks later (you’ll have no more than 5 papers to review).
  2. To reduce your reviewer workload, we will aim to evenly distribute session types across reviewers. This will prevent any single reviewer from exclusively receiving session types that take longer to review than others (e.g., posters).
  3. With more reviewers signed up, we can reduce your reviewer workload even further! So please encourage your friends and colleagues to sign up as well!

What is expected of reviewers?
Although comments to authors are extremely helpful and expected, they primarily serve a developmental purpose for authors. Only your quantitative ratings are used to make acceptance decisions. Thus, a long review (such as that for a journal) is not necessary – most reviews take between 20 and 45 minutes to complete. We will ask you to indicate your content areas of expertise and will make every attempt to send you papers that fall within your areas of interest. You will also receive a review guidance/advice document alongside submissions to further facilitate the process for providing high-quality reviews.

Technical questions about the reviewer registration system or process should be addressed to Larry Nader in the SIOP Administrative Office at lnader@siop.org.

Thank you for lending your expertise to serve SIOP and our profession in this critical role!
