Take a Global View at SIOP 2016

by SIOP Administrative Office

The SIOP professional community spans the globe, with over a thousand members living outside the United States. More than 40 countries are represented in the list of SIOP 2016 conference attendees, accounting for about 10 percent of the registrations to date.

SIOP leadership has long recognized the importance of international collaboration to advancing the profession and leveraging the potential for members to effect positive change in the workplace and the wider world. SIOP Past-President Gary Latham articulated a specific agenda for international collaboration, along with a brief history of collaborative steps, in his July 2008 President’s Message.

It wasn’t long afterward that an ad hoc committee led by Milt Hakel, presented an agreement for collaboration to SIOP, Division 1 of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), and the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP). The three organizations officially ratified the agreement creating the Alliance in the fall of 2011.

Increased international focus at the annual SIOP conference is just one benefit of the collaborative work. This year, several committees have contributed a series of activities and sessions highlighting the international community of Industrial Organizational Psychologists.

Here’s a short chronological list of events with global scope, some celebratory and others more analytical. More information is available in the conference program.
