Agenda Announced for SIOP’s 11th Annual Leading Edge Consortium!

Today’s work environment has fundamentally changed the way employees perform.

Work today is more interdependent and matrixed, with almost 50% of employees reporting they have to navigate increasingly complex organizational structures across distance and boundaries. Even more report a need for increased horizontal coordination and collaboration. But employees are not just experiencing more complexity and interdependency, they are also experiencing more work. Six out of 10 employees say their workload has increased over the past several years, and executives say that, on average, they need to grow their companies upwards of 25% with the same or fewer resources. This new work environment and its myriad demands are changing what’s required for organizations and their employees to optimize performance, meet expectations, and compete effectively.

The 11th Annual SIOP Leading Edge Consortium, “Building a High Performance Organization: A Fresh Look at Performance Management,” to take place October 2-3 in Boston, will focus on innovative strategies, tools, and methods to drive high performance in this complex and demanding work environment.


This year's consortium will include sessions on performance management strategy, benchmarking, legal issues, design, and feedback, including case studies from such organizations as Google, Sears Holding Corporation, General Electric, the FBI, and Deloitte. Click here to read the tentative agenda!

Sessions will explore ways to achieve positive organizational change, enable manager effectiveness and ability to drive performance, and enact learning and behavior change that’s needed to achieve success. Myths will be debunked about the effectiveness of our current talent management approaches in motivating and improving employee performance as we explore new thinking on what’s necessary today to actually impact performance outcomes. Questions addressed include:

  • What performance imperatives are essential in today’s work environment for organizations to meet their performance expectations/goals, and how do we achieve these?
  • How do we drive key behaviors that create a high-performance culture, such as informal feedback, clear real-time expectations, and coaching behavior among all employees?
  • How can we develop employees effectively in a way that actually drives performance? What scalable, effective and innovative new tools and processes exist to develop employees and enable managers to support development?
  • What implications do today’s work demands, work environments, and business strategies have for how we manage performance?
  • How can we design performance management processes that will support the organization’s business strategy (ratings or no ratings, what type of goal settings, linkages to pay or not, how many reviews and what to do in them, etc.)?
  • What do we know about the true distribution of performance that’s different than we thought in the past and what implications does this have for driving performance, managing performance, and rewards? What’s really needed to drive performance increases and compete optimally in today’s work environment?

The consortium includes lunch on Friday and Saturday, breaks, and a reception on Thursday evening.
