This conference is an opportunity for seasoned and developing professionals, current students, and others interested in I-O psychology and organizational behavior to engage with each other in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

“The IOOB Conference is specifically designed to benefit students, to create an environment for analysis of pertinent issues and to provide professional development,” said Brady Donaldson, an MA student in industrial-organizational psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology who is helping organize the event. “This professional development opportunity will be comprehensive, including exchanging of information on best practices and new research, learning to leverage skills specific to our fields for success as managers and leaders, and extensive networking opportunities to share knowledge and build connections.”

Recent economic strive has caused strain in many organizations, Donaldson explained. This creates opportunity for I-O and OB professionals to apply their knowledge, new research, and best practices to help organizations reach their goals while balancing globalization, advancing technology, shifts in the workforce, and continuing economic uncertainty.

“The IOOB 2014 Conference is an opportunity for graduate students to present and analyze pertinent issues in the field in the context of this ‘new normal,’” he added.

As the economy bounces back, young professionals need to prepare to shift organizational focus, find the right track, and stay one step ahead of the curve.

“I-O and OB professionals offer organizations practical skills and knowledge to address uncertainty,” Donaldson explained. “IOOB 2014 Conference presentations will address these topics specifically in the context of the current environment. Attendees will be equipped with information to apply in organizational settings as the economic situation improves, but uncertainty continues to dominate strategy.”
Topics for this event include:

  • Shifting Practices: Promoting best practices in response to the effects of globalization and rapid technological advances.
  • Focused Initiatives: Keys to the successful implementation of I-O and OB initiatives in a changing economic environment.
  • Next Generation: Preparing the next generation of I-O and OB professionals to make an impact in the postrecession environment.

Presentations will include a keynote address by Jay Finkelman, PhD, Department Chair Industrial-Organizational, Business Psychology, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, who will speak on “The Psychologist Manager: Success Models for Psychologists in Executive Positions.” Dr. Finkelman will discuss the challenges and opportunities for psychologists entering leadership and management roles, whether in NGOs, commercial, health, or other organizations. Topics will include the motivations and advantages of psychologists in management, their potential limitations and ways to overcome them, and practical career advice. “The goal of the IOOB 2014 Conference planners is to provide an atmosphere for an engaging exchange of ideas with real-world and applicable take aways,” Donaldson added. “As such, the conference is appropriate for current practitioners as well as students developing knowledge in the field.”
