Paul Thayer Receives APA Award for Distinguished Service to Psychological Science

SIOP Fellow and past president Paul Thayer was recently chosen as this year’s recipient of the American Psychological Association (APA) Award for Distinguished Service to Psychological Science.

This award was initiated by the APA Board of Scientific Affairs to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to psychological science through their commitment to a culture of service.

Award recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated service to the discipline by aiding in:

  • Association governance
  • Serving on boards, committees and various psychological associations
  • Editing journals
  • Reviewing grant proposals
  • Mentoring students and colleagues
  • Advocating for psychological science’s best interests with state and federal lawmakers
  • Promoting the value of psychological science in the public eye

Nominees may be involved in one service area, many of the areas, or all of the service areas.

Thayer was specifically honored for the leadership roles he has taken in the governance of several professional societies, his involvement as an editor of several journals, for serving as a mentor to his students and colleagues, and for his participation on advisory panels at the state and national level. In addition, the board noted Thayer’s “outstanding dedication to the discipline, stating that his advocacy for psychological science “has helped to promote it to those outside the field and helped to support those within it.”

A special announcement of the award will appear in an upcoming issue of the APA Science Directorate’s Psychological Science Agenda newsletter and will be posted on the Science Directorate website. In addition, he will receive an honorarium of $1,000.
