SIOP Spotlight On…White Papers

SIOP Offers Research and Best Practices on Leading Organizational Topics

SIOP’s Visibility Committee recently launched a new white paper series that offers I-O psychologists, business and HR leaders, and the general public the newest research, practical knowledge, and organizational best practices from some of the experts in the field of I-O psychology.

The purpose of the “Hot Topics” white paper series is to provide short briefs on high-interest topics in I-O psychology. These papers are written with a non-I-O audience in mind so they can easily be used by HR practitioners and leaders in a variety of businesses. SIOP members are also encouraged to use the white papers as a resource to share with clients, business partners, and others who are interested in learning more about a topic.

“These papers are useful for a broad audience and especially helpful for colleagues, students, clients or partners who are not in the field of I-O and would like to better understand what we do and how we contribute to the workplace,” explained Jolene Skinner, a member of the Visibility Committee that has worked on the white papers. “They provide a useful and approachable overview of important work in our field and current topics in the workplace.”

The Visibility Committee Hot Topic white papers are written by I-O PhD students and undergo reviews from both a committee member and an external reviewer who has expertise in the topic area. This work is managed by the HR/Business subcommittee of the SIOP Visibility Committee. The committee was created to enhance the visibility of I-O psychology to inform thought leaders in business, HR, and government, as well as students and the general public, of the ways in which I-O can improve the profitability of business and the productivity and well-being of the workforce. The Visibility Committee is comprised of six subcommittees, each with unique goals related to promoting I-O: Branding, HR/Business, Media/Outreach, Metrics, Public Policy/Advocacy, and Students/Academia.

SIOP also offers other white papers series through International Affairs Committee and a collaboration between SIOP and SHRM. All of these papers are available on the “Publications” drop-down menu on SIOP. org under “White Papers” and “SIOP/SHRM Collaborative Series.”

International Affairs Committee

One of the principle goals of the International Affairs Committee (IAC) in 2012-2013 was the publication of SIOP white papers on topics of interest to the international I-O community.

To meet this purpose, in April 2011, IAC Chair (Donald Truxillo) and White Paper Subcommittee Chairs (Lynda Zugec and Alok Bhupatkar) began the development of the white paper publication process with the rest of the IAC Committee. The group was able to fulfill their goal and publish two white papers on the following topics: (1) Applicant Reactions by Talya Bauer, Julie McCarthy, Neil Anderson, Donald M. Truxillo, and Jesús F. Salgado; and (2) Retirement by Mo Wang and Beryl Hesketh. These white papers can be downloaded from the links below. Going forward, the newly created IAC White Paper Series Board (Barbara Kozusznik, Fernanda Afonso, and John C. Scott) will take the initiative to identify and review new topics that will form the basis of our next papers in the white paper series.

SIOP and SHRM: Promoting Evidence-Based HR

This research collaboration between SIOP and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is taking steps to put I-O psychology into the hands of HR practitioners. The collaboration is titled “Publication and Dissemination of Science to Practice: A Research Collaboration Between the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).”

The premise of the project is to infuse the science behind the I-O psychology and human resources disciplines into management practices for daily use in the workplace. The collaboration has three main goals:

  • Make the science of I-O psychology accessible to SHRM members
  • Guide SHRM members in evidence-based HR practices
  • Enhance the visibility of the profession of I-O psychology

To accomplish these goals, SIOP is working to develop materials about topics that will be published and distributed by SHRM to its membership. Each collaborative article will be posted here and can also be viewed on SHRM's website here.

*This paper was first published by the SIOP International Affairs Committee and then revised through the SIOP/SHRM Collaboration specifically for HR professionals.
